WHY CHINA BOUGHT ALMOST A FULL YEAR'S WORTH OF GOLD IN A SINGLE SEPTEMBER
The People's Bank of China added 23 tonnes of gold to its reserves in September 2026, nearly matching its entire accumulation for 2025 in a single month. Why did Beijing step up its bullion buying just as dollar gold prices tumbled 8.5%?
In a 15 October 2026 market update for the World Gold Council, analyst Ray Jia noted that the LBMA Gold Price PM [1] dropped 8.5% in USD during September, while Shanghai RMB benchmarks fell 5.5%. Sovereign buyers rarely move so sharply against the tape.
Beijing went the other way. That single month marked the central bank's largest reserve addition since autumn 2023.
Last year's ledger puts the surge in perspective. Calculations published by The Vault Report on 9 October 2026 show that China added roughly 27 tonnes of bullion across all twelve months of 2025. One autumn month in 2026 nearly matched a full year of prior buying. The pace has shifted.
23 Months Without a Pause: What the Regulator's Ledger Hides
SAFE's ledger is blunt. Primary reserve data released by the State Administration of Foreign Exchange (SAFE) on 7 October 2026 tracks a steady climb: official holdings rose from 75.44m fine troy ounces in June to 76.08m in July, 76.73m in August, and 77.47m fine troy ounces by the end of September [2]. That monthly step of 740,000 fine troy ounces equals 23 tonnes of physical metal.
September stretched an unbroken buying streak that began in November 2024 to 23 consecutive months. Across the third quarter of 2026, the People's Bank of China acquired 63 tonnes (a three-month total for China alone). That lifted year-to-date additions to 103 tonnes and pushed the total official stockpile to 2,410 tonnes.
The bullion share remains modest. After nearly two years of monthly additions, gold accounts for just 8.5% of China's total official foreign exchange reserves.
The SAFE table leaves plenty of room for intrigue [2]. The agency publishes only month-end balance snapshots and never discloses intra-month trade dates, execution prices, or counterparties. The 23-tonne intake and the 8.5% USD price drop happened in the same calendar month. Beijing's actual entry prices remain a secret.
The Shanghai Paradox: The Central Bank Accelerates While the Wholesale Market Waits
Wholesale demand moved the other way. According to the World Gold Council, wholesale gold withdrawals from the Shanghai Gold Exchange (SGE) [3] reached 92 tonnes in September 2026. Volume rose 48% from August on seasonal restocking ahead of autumn holidays, but it sat 22% below the September 2025 level.
Over a full quarter, the gap widens. Wholesale shipments through the SGE totalled 234 tonnes across the third quarter of 2026, well below the ten-year quarterly average of 418 tonnes.
That gap matters. Currency returns also split along calendar lines: gold fell in both currencies during September, but RMB gold prices gained 3% over the third quarter while sitting 7% lower year-to-date in 2026.
Two Tracks of China's Gold Market in September and Q3 2026
| Period / Metric | PBOC Official Reserves (SAFE / WGC) | China Wholesale Market: SGE Withdrawals (WGC) | Price Context (WGC) |
|---|---|---|---|
| September 2026 | +23 tonnes (+740k fine troy ounces): largest monthly addition since autumn 2023; 23rd consecutive month of growth | 92 tonnes (+48% vs August 2026, but −22% vs September 2025) | −8.5% in USD (LBMA Gold Price PM); −5.5% in yuan (RMB) |
| Q3 2026 | +63 tonnes over three months | 234 tonnes for the quarter (vs 10-year average of 418 tonnes) | +3% in RMB over Q3 |
| Baseline / Total | Full year 2025: ~27 tonnes (The Vault Report). 2026 YTD: +103 tonnes. Total holdings: 2,410 tonnes (8.5% of reserves) | Wholesale demand stays below its multi-year norm | −7% in RMB year-to-date in 2026 |

What This Means for the Market and Investors (JetGold View)
- For the market: China's sovereign buyer and its commercial sector keep different clocks. Retail buyers and jewellers held back at 234 tonnes for the quarter against a 418-tonne ten-year average, while the central bank pressed ahead with a 23-month reserve rebalancing despite monthly pullbacks in USD benchmarks. Traders should not confuse PBOC reserve allocation with private Chinese demand.
- For investors: The September report does not prove Beijing "bought the exact bottom", because PBOC trade dates and execution prices remain undisclosed. It points instead to a long-term structural target: at 2,410 tonnes, gold makes up just 8.5% of China's official reserves. What share of gold in the national treasury will Beijing ultimately deem sufficient to halt its 23-month buying streak?
Notes
[1]LBMA Gold Price PM: The daily afternoon USD benchmark price set on the London bullion market, used globally to gauge gold price performance.[2]How SAFE's reserve table and USD/SDR columns work: China's State Administration of Foreign Exchange (SAFE) reports official gold holdings in tens of thousands of fine troy ounces (June: 7,544; July: 7,608; August: 7,673; September: 7,747 units, or 77.47m fine troy ounces; the September increase of +740,000 fine troy ounces equals roughly 23 tonnes). The adjacent columns denominated in USD and SDR (IMF Special Drawing Rights) simply revalue that exact same physical metal at month-end market prices and must not be added to the physical weight.[3]Shanghai Gold Exchange (SGE) withdrawals: The volume of physical bullion removed from exchange vaults by commercial banks, jewellery chains, and industrial users; this metric is the primary barometer of wholesale physical gold demand inside China.
