COULD LAST OCTOBER’S LONDON SILVER SQUEEZE HAPPEN AGAIN THIS AUTUMN?
London’s silver vaults added 4,404 tonnes over the past twelve months to reach 28,985 tonnes at the end of September 2026. Why, then, do bullion dealers still worry about a repeat of last October’s acute lending squeeze, given that gross [LBMA](https://www.lbma.org.uk/prices-and-data/london-vault-data) stockpiles rarely reflect the bars actually available for immediate spot lease?
The Ghost of 34.9% and Airlifted Bullion
Silver is heavy and cheap compared with gold. Bulk shipments almost always travel by sea. When traders start loading 1,000-ounce silver bars onto cargo planes, something fundamental has broken in the spot market.
That exact drama unfolded in October 2025. According to Bloomberg figures cited in a 10 October 2026 review by Global Economy Charts, London silver lease rates jumped to 34.9% annualised on 9 October 2025. Industrial users and banks needing immediate physical bars paid punitive premiums just to borrow metal overnight.
Traders fought the fire by air. Emergency airlifts of bullion from the United States and China replenished British vaults, and the lease rate retreated to 5.6% annualised by 27 October 2025.
The acute squeeze faded in two and a half weeks. Dealers never forgot the speed of that drain. The world’s premier over-the-counter bullion hub had run short of lendable bars in days, forcing every desk to read autumn 2026 vault ledgers with fresh scepticism.
Full Basements Inside the M25 Orbital
Vault ledgers tell a quieter story this autumn. Primary data from the LBMA show that London vaults held 28,985 tonnes of silver valued at USD 56.6 billion at the end of September 2026, up from 24,581 tonnes at the end of September 2025 right before last year’s rate spike.
Total holdings climbed by 4,404 tonnes over those twelve months. That represents an expansion of roughly 18% for the year, with inventories adding 1.95% in September 2026 alone [1].
| Metric | September – October 2025 (Acute Squeeze Phase) | September – October 2026 (Current Balance) |
|---|---|---|
| LBMA Vault Holdings | 24,581 tonnes (end of September 2025) | 28,985 tonnes / USD 56.6 billion (end of September 2026) |
| Inventory Dynamics | Baseline level prior to the October squeeze | +4,404 tonnes (approx. +18% year-on-year; +1.95% in September 2026) |
| London Lease Rate | Spike to 34.9% annualised (09.10.2025), retreating to 5.6% (27.10.2025) | Calm trading regime after inventory rebuild |
| Delivery Logistics | Emergency airlifts of bullion bars from the US and China | Routine vault replenishment |

Gross tonnage hides the real bottleneck. Total physical weight in a monthly report never equals the volume of silver actually up for sale or lease. Most of that metal sits locked inside exchange-traded funds and institutional portfolios.
London basements held 24,581 tonnes at the end of September 2025. Those giant stacks did nothing to stop lease rates from rocketing to 34.9% annualised nine days later. A severe squeeze starts long before the vaults run dry: it begins the moment holders of the unencumbered free float refuse to lend bars at yesterday’s price.
Paper Overhang and How Exchange Warehouses Work
Exchange ledgers work the same way. Commentators routinely compare futures open interest with exchange warehouse stocks and predict an imminent vault drain.
As Global Economy Charts points out, equating total futures open interest with immediate physical delivery demand misreads how derivatives function. Most futures positions exist purely for hedging or price exposure. Traders close them out or roll them forward before expiry.
Inside exchange warehouses, bullion is strictly divided by legal status into registered metal (bars carrying an active warrant for delivery) and eligible metal (bars meeting exchange specifications without a warrant) [2]. Nor does a futures delivery notice start a diesel forklift at the warehouse gate. The vault doors never open. Settlement usually changes only the owner’s name in the ledger while the bar stays put [3].
What This Means for the Market and Investors (JetGold View)
For the market: adding 4,404 tonnes over the past year lowers the odds of a mechanical repeat of last autumn’s shock, when London’s shortfall had to be plugged by cargo flights from the United States and China. Borrowing costs remain the true tell. The monthly LBMA report arrives with a lag, whereas overnight lease rates reveal physical stress the minute spot demand flares.
For investors: equating gross vault weight or futures open interest with deliverable supply misjudges how bullion clears. During a squeeze, only the speed at which you can secure unencumbered physical metal matters, not the paper volume of contracts. How much of the 28,985 tonnes currently sitting in London basements will truly be ready to change hands without double-digit lease rates when big players next demand a physical bar instead of a ledger entry?
Notes
[1]LBMA Storage Perimeter (M25 Orbital) and Free Float: LBMA monthly statistics are published with a time lag, cover commercial member vaults located within London’s M25 orbital motorway (encompassing various forms of metal including coins, while excluding certain private holdings), and report gross physical volume, most of which is locked inside institutional portfolios and exchange-traded funds.[2]Registered vs Eligible Categories and Warehouse Warrants: Registered bullion consists of bars backed by an issued warrant (title document) and ready for immediate futures delivery; Eligible metal sits in the same warehouse and meets all exchange standards, but its owner has not warranted it for settlement against futures contracts.[3]Open Interest and Delivery Notices: The total number of outstanding futures contracts; the vast majority are closed out or rolled forward prior to expiration without any physical removal of metal, and delivery itself frequently involves only a title transfer on the warehouse register.
