What is in your hand

One coin. Four things worth understanding.

The edge on the model is illustrative. A real coin has its own edge design, which can serve as a security feature, so mints do not publicly show some edge designs.

    Why people trust it

The origin is visible. The security can be examined.

Each of the ten is struck by a state mint, and every issue has its own authenticity features. Tap a dot to magnify that part of the image; switch between frames — obverse, reverse, edge, at an angle.

    How to check any coin

    1. 1ScaleCompare the coin’s mass with the specifications above. Use a scale accurate to 0.01 g.
    2. 2CaliperCompare the diameter and thickness with the specifications above. A brass or copper fake of the same size weighs considerably less.
    3. 3EdgeThe reeding should be even and crisp, without gaps or a seam. Blurred reeding or a seam calls for caution.
    4. 4MagnifierFine lettering and details should be clear, with clean letter edges. Check that the mint’s stated features are in place.
    5. 5MagnetGold is not attracted to a magnet. If the coin is attracted, it is not gold.

Use the coin specifications above for comparison. Dealers’ instruments detect sophisticated counterfeits by testing the metal through the full thickness of the coin without damaging it.

    Before buying

    Four questions
    worth asking.

    01

How much pure gold does it contain?

Look at the actual pure gold content, not the total weight of the coin. For example, a coin of 916 fineness weighs almost 34 grams, but contains exactly one troy ounce (31.1035 g) of pure gold. You pay for the pure metal, not the alloying metals.

    02

How much am I paying above the spot price?

Calculate the premium over the spot price rather than looking only at the catalogue price. With equal liquidity, a lower premium means a rising market can bring your purchase into profit sooner.

    03

How easily could I sell it?

Check how widely recognised the coin is and the spread between its buying and selling prices. A classic one-ounce coin is liquid worldwide, while a rare or little-known issue may only be accepted at a steep discount.

    04

How are authenticity and provenance verified?

Make sure the coin’s measurements (diameter, thickness and weight) can be checked without damage, and that the seller is identifiable, verifiable and offers an open buyback guarantee.

    Short answers

The main doubts — in six answers.

    • Yes. An investment coin is a disc of gold struck by a state mint. You can hold it in your hand, keep it at home or in a safe box and pass it on as an inheritance. No “records on an account”.
